I am truly sorry that you feel I am polarizing the community. That is not my intent in reality or in this post.

This post was about ME realising that if I truly want to be community focused, I need to be involved in things that are outside my small group of close friends.

I, too, truly hope that Thanksgiving is a time to put aside differences and to really embrace community. I hope that if you are there we are able to share a drink, eat some food and chat.Mad About Bookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05137485043583132298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-394131902934179172.post-69701474178533540452013-11-21T10:48:00.664+00:002013-11-21T10:48:00.664+00:00I enjoyed reading this piece. I think it's a wonderful thing that so many expats in Jochiwon enjoy a variety of fun and activities because it gives us all a chance to meet and the opportunity to join in on the things we actually enjoy.
Don't like tea? Don't worry because there's a BBQ next week. Not into hiking? Don't sweat it (no pun intended) because a group is going to the movies tomorrow night. There are plenty of opportunities to socialize over something you enjoy.
Book clubs aren't my thing (mainly because I'm too opinionated. ha), but that doesn't stop me from getting to know others in the community because there are other things to be apart of that I do enjoy.
I love that you organize things, and clearly you have a knack for bringing people together. Keep on doing what you do. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-394131902934179172.post-78017443231583386752013-11-21T06:54:49.627+00:002013-11-21T06:54:49.627+00:00You might think I'm mad but..... I think you&#...You might think I'm mad but..... I think you'd be surprised to learn that the "soju and a chat" people have more to offer than you're characterizing here. You might be surprised to know that they've lived in Korea longer than you, have explored more of Korea and the world than you, know more Hangul, have more close Korean friends than you, are well educated, intelligent people who also cook dinners and have friends over to their houses, have intelligent conversations, are welcoming, even nice! You might also be surprised to discover that these people don't appreciate when people make unnecessary divisions within the aforementioned small community of Jochiwon. Perhaps it would be strange to hear that in the past the Jochiwon community was much closer, drinkers and non-drinkers alike, because people chose not to make those judgements and made sincere efforts to get to know one another. Here's the thing M: you like good wholesome fun and don't want to drink -- just own it. You don't have to draw sides and pretend that you're somehow better than the people (adults) who choose to spend some of their time drinking. It's not very charming, and it has changed the atmosphere in the community. Clearly, we're under no obligations to be friends with every expat we come in contact with, but there's no reason that this community can't function better than it is right now. I think the soju and chat people would appreciate it if you stopped looking at the community through such a moralistic, polarizing, and cliquish lens. Perhaps Thanksgiving can help bring the tribes together. Here's hoping! (BTW you never drank when you arrived here, so why do you act like you did? -- no one is judging you!!!)
